In 2017, we celebrated the Year of the Rooster with a series of projects focused around this wonderful animal (and his amazing counterpart, Ms Chick). This project in particular, a foam clay rooster sculpture, became a favorite among our students.
This project offered a unique way for kids to explore their creativity while working with foam clay, a material that is lightweight, clean, easy to manipulate, and perfect for young hands.
Foam clay dries quickly without the need for baking, making it both convenient and budget-friendly. It’s also easy to paint and store, making it an ideal medium for children’s craft projects.
This step-by-step guide will show you how to create your own colorful rooster sculpture using foam clay!
Materials:
- Wooded Board
- Thick Metal Wire
- Thinner Metal Wire
- Nails
- Foam Clay
- Acrylic Paint
- Paintbrushes
Instructions:
Step 1: Build the Wire Frame
- Shape the Thick Wire: Start by bending a piece of thick wire into a simple J-shape, which will become the rooster’s neck, body, and tail. Add two legs at the base and nail the structure to a wooden block for stability.
- Wrap with Thin Wire: Wrap the entire J-shaped structure with thin wire, making sure to create small loops or “ears” that will help the clay adhere to the frame.
Step 2: Sculpt the Rooster with Foam Clay
Once the frame is set, it’s time for students to sculpt! Let them cover the wire frame with foam clay, shaping the body, head, tail feathers, and legs. Foam clay is easy to manipulate, allowing children to explore different textures and forms.
Tip: Provide photos or drawings of roosters for inspiration, but let kids express their creativity freely!
Step 3: Air Dry the Sculpture
After shaping the rooster, set the sculptures aside to air dry. The drying process will depend on the clay thickness, but it’s best to allow a full day for hardening.
Step 4: Paint with Acrylic Colors
Now for the fun part! Once the rooster is dry, it’s time to paint. Hand out a range of acrylic paints and encourage students to add their own colorful designs to their roosters. They can go for a traditional look or create fantastical, rainbow-colored birds.
